I need some help

So, Lars and I have mostly moved into the new house. My biggest problem area is the front living room.  The front door opens right into the living room.  I've taken some pictures to help you all see what it looks like right now.    We inherited the loveseat, some wooden chairs and an end table from dad's office.  We also have the piano from the garage, "Hack" as it is affectionately known as.  Hack doesn't have a piano bench right now so we have an office chair sitting there for now.  We haven't hung up any pictures either.  I want to get the front room arranged and then I can get pictures up.  So, I'm open for suggestions.  I think I want to get a couch and get rid of the the chairs.  I've thought of moving the piano where the loveseat is right now or against the short wall.  What do ya'll think?

From the hallway that goes to the bedroom, here's the view of the living room.  It kinda looks like a dental office in a way - except for the plants and the books on the floor.

From the front door looking to the "short wall" where we now have the piano, but I really don't think I like it here.  You can see the mirror that needs to be hung as well as the clock (in the very back).

Looking straight from the front door to the dining area.  See Lars on his computer in the dining area.  He thinks this is his desk sometimes.  You can see the "short wall" on the left. Thanks for the furniture mom and dad.  That was really nice.  I think I want to get a cover for it though - it's a little dirty.

This is a shot from where Lars was sitting. You can see our bedroom to the left.

I found this website where I could make a floor plan so I did.  I was just telling Lars that if I'd spend as much time trying to design the room as I did creating this floorplan, I wouldn't be writing this blog today.

Hopefully you are all very visual and creative people and can see what I'm talking about.  Does anyone have any suggestions for making this space more useful?  We are open to purchasing furniture (like a sofa and maybe a big chair or something) as well as wall hangings. I just need someone with some ability to design to help me out here.  I simply don't have that talent...yet.

  1. Well from looking at the pictures, I have only one suggestion. So here it is. I think Lars needs to be moved to one of the other chairs around the table.

  2. I have a few that might help:
    1. How much are your exams? he he I see "dad's office" written ALL over your living room! A slip cover would probably make a WORLD of difference.
    2. You're not going to be there long...DO not buy furniture to suite this home, when you know you'll be moving in less than 2-3 years, right?
    3. I think the piano needs to go...how did you get that anyway? I have been trying to figure that in my home designs! :)
    4. On a day off...hit a few garage sales. You might find a chair or couch that could replace the single chairs. OR a trader Or craigslist...just DON'T spend a lot of mula on something when your planning on moving...your planning on moving right?
    5. A serious suggestion: Put the piano on the other wall (against the bedroom where couch is now) two chairs with end table between in front of window, and couch on angle against the "short wall".

    GOOD LUCK!!

  4. You might consider using Google's sketchup program (sketchup.google.com). Tim and Rebecca used it for a while in arranging their place, and I was pretty impressed with how well it worked for visualizing.

I'm going to vote for switching the sofa and the piano as well. There's something odd about walking through the front door and right into a couch... Somehow I'd feel better if it was a piano. Don't ask-- it just feels weird to me.

  5. One big suggestion I have is to go ahead and move everything around and try lots of different things! Or rather, get Lars to move everything around for you. Google Sketchup is really cool, and we still use that everytime we acquire something new for the apartment, or everytime Tim wants to switch things up again, which is surprisingly often. :D

You can use the couch to divide up the room a bit. We tried that for a while and liked it. For instance, you could put the couch a 4 feet or so in front of the wall of windows, facing the short wall, and bam! Instant foyer. But maybe just switching the piano and the couch will be exactly what you want.

Also, just a plug for wooden instruments--I'm sure Hack will be happiest next to a wall that's not adjoining the outside world. Hack actually looks very pretty in the picture. I hope he doesn't mind being called pretty. ;)

  6. Girl, you so need a big fat modern book shelf on the short wall in the front room, put a couch under the window and the love seat against the wall between the book shelf and the couch. Then put the piano against the wall closer to the hallway then the door. Becca is right, get rid of the office chairs and go for a slip cover for the love seat that will go with the sofa you buy.
